While they can be a great way to highlight things in your project, it is important to keep in mind that they draw significant power and can overheat quickly if you do not properly manage them. The good news is that the majority of LED strip products are designed to effectively underdrive the LEDs so they do not overheat. This means they typically exhibit temperature rises far below the thermal limits of the LEDs and circuit board components.
Economical LED Strip Solutions Without Compromising Quality
Choosing a strip that is right for your project is very important. Look at the brightness per foot of the product to determine if it will meet your requirements. Also, be sure to check the current draw per foot of the product. This will fluctuate depending on the patterns and color changing that you do.
Some LED strips can be controlled using a microcontroller like the Intel Edison. To do this you will need a MOSFET to switch on the higher voltage that the Edison pins output. We recommend using the IRF510 rated at 5.6A for this purpose.
