Dental Crowns – What Are Dental Crowns and How Are They Made?

Dental crowns  is a tooth-shaped cover that can be placed over a damaged tooth to restore its size, strength and appearance. It can be used to repair a tooth with severe decay, a cracked or broken tooth, as part of a root canal treatment or as an alternative to a dental bridge. It can also be fixed over a dental implant to protect it.

There are many types of dental crowns available to our patients including ceramic, zirconia, resin and metals like gold and silver. The type of crown your dentist recommends will depend on the condition of your tooth, its location in the mouth and your aesthetic preferences.

Your first appointment will involve numbing and shaping the tooth for its new crown. This can be done using a local anaesthetic to ensure that you don’t experience any discomfort. Our dentists will then take a detailed scan of your tooth using the iTero scanner, which does away with the need for messy impression goop and produces an incredibly accurate 3D model of your tooth. This will be sent to a lab, where your dental crown will be designed and milled.

We use the Procera and Empress dental crown systems at VC Dental. These are the most popular options due to their strength and lifelike aesthetic properties. Both crowns are made through a two-layer system. A core is built from aluminium oxide and then feldspathic porcelain is stacked in a superficial outer later, which makes them look more translucent and lifelike.
